Eric Carle

Page history last edited by Cheryl Madden 10 years, 5 months ago

Today in Library we will learn about the author Eric Carle.

The library is full of many books written by many different authors.  We are going to begin to look at some books that are all written by the same author--Eric Carle!

What is an author?

What is an illustrator?

Eric Carle is very special because he writes books and also illustrates them.  Eric Carle began his career by drawing pictures for advertisements.  One day, an author named Bill Martin, Jr., asked Eric Carle to do the illustrations for his new book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do You See?  Eric Carle began by creating illustrations for books other people wrote.  Soon Eric Carle began to write his own books.  Eric Carle uses a special technique, called collage, to create his illustrations.  He uses hand-painted papers to make his designs.  He cuts and layers them on top of each other to make each picture look special.

Let's listen to Eric Carle read one of his books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar:

  • What is another name for a firefly?
  • Can you describe the characteristics of a firefly?

  • The title of the story is The Very Lonely Firefly.  What does the word "lonely" mean?
  • Listen as we read the story.  When we are finished reading, we will sequence the events.  That means to put the events in the correct order.

  • Work together at your table to use your sequencing cards.
  • Look at the pictures on the cards to put the events in order.
  • Now let's check our work!
