Today in Library we will learn about Veterans Day

in order to explain its history and significance.

November 11th is a day on which many people around the world honor men and women who served in the armed forces.

It began as a celebration of the peace after World War I ended. This date was chosen because on November 11, 1918, an armistice (truce) was signed that ended World War I.  Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day.

Armistice Day became an official United States federal holiday in 1938. The holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954, and became an official national holiday.
